Softball team downs Eagles

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School softball team closed out a stretch of five games in six days last week with wins over George Stevens Academy and John Bapst and a loss to Foxcroft.

After beating Ellsworth last Monday and topping Washington Academy the following day, MDI made it three in a row last Wednesday with a 6-1 home win over GSA. The game was a makeup after the Trojans’ home opener scheduled for April 19 was postponed twice.

Lindsey McEachern, Mackenzie Dyer and Gabbie James singled for MDI, and Maddie Jones added a double for the Trojans. Maddie Neale had two RBIs and two runs scored and also recorded a stolen base.

Emily York earned the win for MDI on the mound with nine strikeouts. She allowed just five hits and didn’t walk a batter as the Trojans won three games in a row for the first time this season.

Hosting Foxcroft on Thursday, MDI saw its winning streak snapped when it lost 7-2. McEachern, York and Hannah Chamberlain had hits for MDI, but it wasn’t enough against a Foxcroft squad out to prove itself after succumbing to its first loss of the season the previous day.

The Trojans moved back in the win column Saturday when they rallied from a late-inning deficit to post a 6-5 victory over John Bapst in Bar Harbor. The result put MDI two games above .500 for the first time since the team swept a doubleheader against Caribou to move to 2-0 on April 28.

After MDI pulled ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, the teams went scoreless over the next two before John Bapst managed to tie the game with a pair of runs in the fourth. A scattering of base hits in the top of the sixth gave the visiting Crusaders three more runs to bring their total to five, with the Trojans still at 2.

MDI plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. McEachern then shut down the Crusaders in the seventh to seal the win.

Maddie Neale had two hits for MDI, which had six on the day. Neale, Jones, York, Dyer and Maddie Thornton also had hits for MDI with Dyer adding two RBIs.

McEachern struck out seven on the mound, where she allowed just four hits and one walk while not allowing an earned run. The junior ace now has three wins on the season with 55 strikeouts and 1.83 ERA.

MDI was scheduled to travel to Belfast (5-5) on Tuesday afternoon, but inclement weather forced the teams to postpone the game until Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Trojans are scheduled to face GSA (1-9) in Blue Hill on Thursday, May 17, at 4:30 p.m. They face Belfast again on Wednesday, May 23, at 4 p.m., at home.
