TRENTON — The Mount Desert Island High School golf team fell a single point short of a first-place finish at the first tournament of the year Monday.
At Bar Harbor Golf Course, MDI claimed second place with 179 points to Houlton’s 178. The result marked a strong start to the season for the Trojans, who finished second at the Penobscot Valley Conference championship last year after starting the season with 13 straight wins.
Kyle Nicholson was the star golfer of the day for MDI with a score of 39. The junior finished the day as a medalist for the Trojans, who placed well ahead of Ellsworth and Foxcroft at the four-team tournament.
Other top performers for MDI were Nick Stanley and Colyn Rich, who shot 45 and 46, respectively. Rounding out the rest of the results for the Trojans were Brennan Hubbard (49), Dane Vanzura (53) and Gabbie James (56).
MDI next plays against George Stevens Academy at Kebo Valley Club in Bar Harbor on Friday, Sept. 1, at 4 p.m.
