Boys third, girls fourth at first track meet of season



BAR HARBOR — Runners from Mount Desert Island High School finished among the top performers at Saturday’s season-opening indoor track meet at the University of Maine in Orono.

On the boys’ side, Liam Higgins was the star of the day for an MDI team that finished in third place with 87 points. Higgins won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 9.2 seconds and ran the 200-meter dash in 25.28 to claim second.

Four MDI runners finished in the top six in the mile run. Oliver Johnston took second with a time of 4:56.09, and Stanley Grierson, Stephen Grierson and Parker Shortell claimed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

In the field, the MDI boys dominated the shot put. Croix Albee won with a throw of 48 feet, 9.5 inches, and Samuel Hoff had a throw of 41 feet, 9.5 inches to claim third. Micah Hallett, Gilbert Isaacs, Adam Burdzel, Chance Closson and Archer Hill rounded out spots 5-9 for the Trojans.

With the help of senior Ashley Anderson, the Mount Desert Island girls’ team finished fourth on the day with a total of 62 points. Anderson won the 55-meter dash in 7.64 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 27.09 seconds and the 400-meter dash in 1:06.33.

Another top finisher for MDI was sophomore Zoe Olson. Olson finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 30.22 seconds and second in the mile run with a time of 5:54.81.

Seniors Dorothy LeMoine and Alicia Norberg finished a respective second and third for MDI in the shot put. LeMoine’s throw in the finals measured 29 feet, 10 inches, and Norberg’s throw was close behind at 29 feet, 6.5 inches.

MDI is set to return to Orono for its second meet of the season on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 2:30 p.m. The Trojans will compete against Bangor, Bucksport, Ellsworth, George Stevens Academy, Old Town and Orono.
