Boys fourth, girls sixth at track meet



BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert High School boys and girls finished fourth and sixth, respectively, at the 2017-18 season’s third Eastern Maine Indoor Track League meet Saturday at the University of Maine.

The MDI boys’ team’s 61 points placed it ahead of Orono, Central and George Stevens Academy. The Trojans nearly edged Brewer and Old Town, who were third and second, respectively, with 73 and 77 points.

MDI’s biggest success on the boys’ side came in the relay races. 4-by- 100-meter relay runners Croix Albee, Archer Hill, Micah Hallett and Samuel Hoff won the event with a time of 52.26 seconds. The 4-by-400-meter relay crew of Liam Higgins, Matt Perconti, Thorin Smith and Griffin Maristany also won their race.

In the 1-mile run, MDI’s Stanley Grierson, Stephen Grierson and Parker Shortell finished second, third and fourth, respectively. Smith, Stanley Grierson, Stephen Grierson and Finian Burns finished second as a team in the 4K distance medley.

On the girls’ side, MDI had enormous individual success early in the meet. Sophomore Zoe Olson won the 1-mile run with a time of 6 minutes, 7.05 seconds, and Ashley Anderson left the rest of the field in the dust to win the 55-meter dash in 7.66 seconds, almost one-half second ahead of the nearest competitor.

In the field, Alicia Norberg finished second of 25 competitors with a distance of 29 feet, 10 inches in the shot put. MDI’s 21 points placed the Trojans ahead of Central.

MDI returns to the University of Maine for its fourth meet of the season on Friday, Jan. 12, at 4 p.m. The Trojans will be up against GSA, Bangor, Brewer and Old Town.
