Boys fourth, girls fifth at track meet

ORONO — Saturday’s track meet was one of the best of the season for the Mount Desert Island High School boys’ team, which placed fourth, ahead of Central, Mattanawcook Academy, George Stevens Academy and Sumner. The MDI girls tied for fifth place at the season’s sixth Eastern Maine Indoor Track League meet.

The boys’ team had four individual winners on the day. Thorin Smith finished first in the 1-mile with a time of 4 minutes, 42.21 seconds to edge Brewer’s Jonathan Donnelly (4:44.83) in a photo finish. Griffin Maristany won the 400-meter dash in 53.08.

In the field, Croix Albee won the shot put with a distance of 49 feet. Matt Perconti gave MDI its final win of the day on the boys’ side by tying Brewer’s Gabe Carrigan with a height of 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump.

Senior Ashley Anderson did not compete for the girls’ team Saturday, but the Trojans still performed well in the nine-team field. The team earned 25 points to tie GSA for fifth and finish ahead of Sumner, Mattanawcook and Penobscot Valley.

Alicia Norberg won the shot put for the Trojans with a distance of 30 feet, one-half inch, and Dori LeMoine finished fifth in that same event with a distance of 27 feet, 2-1/2 inches. Sophomore Zoe Olson finished third in both the 1-mile and 800-meter runs.

MDI will return to the University of Maine for its final meet of the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 2:30 p.m. The Trojans will compete against Brewer, Bucksport, Central, GSA, Mattanawcook, Old Town and Orono.
