BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School boys’ and girls’ track teams placed fourth and fifth, respectively, at Friday’s Eastern Indoor Track League meet at the University of Maine.
The event, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, was moved ahead a day because of icy conditions in the forecast. MDI competed in a tough field that included Bangor, Brewer, George Stevens Academy and Old Town.
On the boys’ side, MDI engaged in a daylong battle with Bangor, Brewer and Old Town with the help of strong individual and team performances. The Trojans finished the day with 57 points.
MDI’s strongest boys’ performances came in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run. Griffin Maristany won the former with a time of 52.98 seconds, and Thorin Smith, Jose Chumbe and Stephen Grierson swept the top three spots in the latter.
Ashley Anderson led the way for the MDI girls with two individual wins. Anderson won the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.50 seconds and added a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.45 seconds.
MDI got another girls’ win from Zoe Olson, who finished the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 29.30 seconds. Olson’s performance was more than 6 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor, Brewer’s Olivia Mosca. The Trojans earned 34 points to come up just short of GSA’s 36.
MDI will return to the University of Maine for the season’s fifth meet this weekend. The Trojans will face Bucksport, Central, Foxcroft, GSA, Hampden Academy, John Bapst and Orono on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 1:30 p.m.
