MDI wins Welles Cup again

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — It was a near thing, but the Mount Desert Island High School Trojans hung on Wednesday afternoon in Southwest Harbor to win their third consecutive Welles Cup team racing regatta. The final score was MDI 5-4 over George Stevens Academy.

The Trojans went into the day holding a 3-1 lead after the first round of the regatta, sailed last week in Castine. On Wednesday, GSA had a much stronger showing, winning three of the day’s five races in decisive fashion and narrowly missing a fourth win late in the afternoon.
