BAR HARBOR — The author of “Lincoln’s Ladder to the Presidency,” Guy Fraker, will be at the Jesup Memorial Library on Wednesday, July 29, at 7 p.m. to talk about Lincoln’s 23 years on the Central Illinois Eighth Judicial Circuit and how the time he spent there propelled him to the White House.
A team of lawyers, led by Judge David Davis of the Eighth Circuit, gained the Republican nomination for Lincoln in 1860. The split of the Democratic Party made the nomination tantamount to election to national office. The circuit, with its leaders and its lawyers, was truly Lincoln’s “ladder to the presidency.” Historian and author Michael Burlingam writes, “Fraker deserves the gratitude of all who seek to understand the life and times of America’s greatest statesman.”
