MOUNT DESERT — The Barn Arts Collective will perform “Shakespeare is My Hero,” an interactive performance with music, at the Northeast Harbor Public Library on Monday, July 20, at 10:30 a.m.

The show will use costumes, songs and help from the audience to introduce the playwright and his work to the next generation of readers, performers and playgoers.

“Shakespeare is My Hero” was created by Brittany Parker and Andrew Simon a year ago for a local literacy program, and since then, the theater-makers have performed the piece throughout the local region in schools, libraries and at the Barn, the waterfront performance space of the Barn Arts Collective in Bass Harbor.

“It’s a show that we really enjoy performing because it’s designed specifically to engage young people with some of the themes, characters and innovations that Shakespeare has given the world,” said Simon. “And there’s a dance party at the end.”

The Barn Arts Collective hosts residencies for visiting artists developing new work and features performances at The Barn across from the Tremont School every weekend. The company also creates adapted and original performances for young audiences; their make-your-own adventure puppet musical, “We Run the Ship,” runs twice a week throughout the summer at the Criterion Theatre in Bar Harbor.
