What’s in a name?

When the National Park Service renamed Lafayette National Park as “Acadia,” officials changed many of the names of Mount Desert Island’s mountains. Their actions had plenty of local precedent. Bar Harbor was once named Eden, and Bass Harbor was called McKinley. Below is a list of mountains on MDI, most of which were once called by another name. These names were culled from old maps and newspaper accounts.
