Trojans ready to battle the Bucks

BAR HARBOR — After several successful preseason matchups, the Mount Desert Island High School varsity baseball team is ready to take on its first regular season opponent on Thursday afternoon.

The Trojans will host Bucksport High School on April 20 at 4 p.m.

Last week, MDI beat three opponents and tied with one.

“All in all, we had a good, successful weekend,” said Head Coach Andy Pooler. “We’re starting to hit the ball very well. We’ve played some good quality teams, and we’re starting to do some good pitching.”

Last Thursday, the Trojans defeated Sumner Memorial High School 6-3. They walloped Orono High School 9-0 the following night.

During a doubleheader on Saturday, MDI tied with host George Stevens Academy and defeated Saint Dominic Academy 7-0.

While the Trojans will not face these teams again during the regular season, it gives each team the chance to play.

“It’s nice to play somebody different,” said Pooler. “We faced four good quality teams that came ready to play that will help us out [this week].”

The scrimmages helped the Trojans tweak their lineup and tighten up their skills. Pooler said he has determined that many players are able to work in different positions.

“Our whole roster is quite deep,” he said. “We’ve got guys who can play many positions.

Coaches tried different players on the mound and in other defensive positions. All players had many at-bat opportunities to work on making contact with the ball.

Pooler said Thursday’s game will come down to pitching and hitting.

“Our pitching is key for us. It’s the No. 1 thing for us now,” said Pooler. “It’s about not giving up a lot of walks and making our defense help behind us.” Senior Seth Clark and junior Matt Perconti will switch off on the mound.

On offense, Pooler said the team needs to focus on hitting the ball and getting in some early runs.

“We’ve got to hit more consistently and hit early in the game to help our pitcher and defense out,” Pooler said.

Next up for the Trojans is an away game at Foxcroft Academy on Saturday, April 22, at 1 p.m. On Tuesday, April 25, MDI will host Ellsworth High School at 4:30 p.m. and will battle John Bapst Memorial High School on Thursday, April 27, at 4:30 p.m., also at home.
