Subscribers to have full access to mdislander.com

Dear Readers,

Starting Jan. 1, we will begin charging for unlimited access to mdislander.com.

Current subscribers – both print and digital – will have full access to the site as part of that package. Everyone else may read up to three free articles each month before being prompted to pay.

Good journalism doesn’t just happen. Our award-winning team works hard to bring you the latest news from the Mount Desert Island area both online and in print. That work has value.

It is important that everyone who enjoys staying up-to-date and informed about our communities help support continued coverage.

For those of you who are regular online readers, we hope you have been enjoying the new site we launched this fall and will continue to do so as subscribers. We’ve invested in our online presence and look forward to informing and entertaining you in the future.

The precedent

We are not the first newspaper to put its online content behind a paywall. The Portland Press Herald, Kennebec Journal, and Waterville Sentinel as well as the Sun Journal in Lewiston, permit only a handful of free articles each month. The Boston Globe and New York Times also cap the number of free articles allowed online.

The nitty gritty

Current subscribers soon will receive a letter containing a username and password for the site. You’ll find the login button in the upper righthand corner of mdislander.com.

Non-subscribers will be notified when they’ve reached their quota for free articles for the month and encouraged to sign up. We’d love to have you! A digital subscription is just $2.99 per month and includes access to the website and weekly e-edition. As a token of our appreciation of all our subscribers, we’re also offering a subscriber savings card with discounts at area businesses.

There will continue to be unfettered online access to our classified listings, obituaries, calendar and real estate sites.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call us at 288-0556.

Sincerely,

Earl Brechlin
